Doctors save baby’s life by operating on her lung before she was born

Lake Annabelle Hall wouldn’t be alive today if doctors at Children’s Hospital of Colorado hadn’t operated on a cyst on her left lung before she was born.

Doctors pulled her halfway out of her mother’s womb, leaving her connected to her the umbilical cord and placenta, which served as life support for her while a team of 43 doctors and nurses operated on her.

She is now 5 months old after the medical procedure for a rare condition that saved her life. Dr. Timothy Crombleholme performed the surgery just before Lake’s birth Nov...

New Report Shows Almost All Kids’ Meals Fail to Meet Nutritional Standards

New Report Shows Almost All Kids’ Meals Fail to Meet Nutritional Standards

The new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest on kids’ meals shocked me. First, I was surprised to learn that of the 3,498 meal combinations in restaurant chains evaluated by the authors of the report, 97 percent do not meet nutrition standards for children’s meals.

Then, I was a bit ashamed to be reminded that I’m also one of these parents feeding their kids these unhealthy meals...

Vitamin D important during pregnancy

Vitamin D important during pregnancy

Low levels of vitamin D during pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of complications in mothers-to-be and low birth weight in their newborns, a new study finds.

The research shows an association but doesn’t prove that insufficient vitamin D causes complications. Still, taking vitamin D supplements may help reduce these risks, the researchers noted.

Researchers examined data from 31 studies published between 1980 and 2012. The studies had between 95 and 1 100 participants.

The analysis revealed that pregnant women with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to develop gestational...

Breakfast cereal tied to lower BMI for kids

Breakfast cereal tied to lower BMI for kids

Regularly eating cereal for breakfast is tied to healthy weight for kids, according to a new study that endorses making breakfast cereal accessible to low-income kids to help fight childhood obesity.

One in every four American children lives in a food insecure household where breakfast isn’t a sure thing, lead author Dr. Lana Frantzen told Reuters Health.

«(Cereal) is an excellent breakfast choice, it’s simple, and gets those essential nutrients that children need, especially low income minority children,» who tend to be hit hardest by childhood obesity and related health problems, said F...

Kids who are bad at math grow into adults who can’t calculate the tip, study suggests

Kids who are bad at math grow into adults who can’t calculate the tip, study suggests

We know a lot about how babies learn to talk, and youngsters learn to read. Now scientists are unraveling the earliest building blocks of math — and what children know about numbers as they begin first grade seems to play a big role in how well they do everyday calculations later on.

The findings have specialists considering steps that parents might take to spur math abilities, just like they do to try to raise a good reader.

This isn’t only about trying to improve the nation’s math scores and attract kids to become engineers. It’s far more basic.

Consider: How rapidly can you calculate a tip?...

6 Grossest Things Kids Do

6 Grossest Things Kids Do

Your kids are perfect, right? They say «please» and «thank you» at the right times. They chew with their mouth closed. Wash their hands often. And they never, ever use potty talk.

Well, at least that’s how you like to view them. Reality, however, paints a very different picture. It makes no difference who you are or how you raise your children. No matter what your race, nationality, financial situation, or location, there is one hard and fast rule: Kids are gross.

Maybe some kids are grosser than others. Maybe some are only gross on occasion...

Paying Kids Allowance Is ‘Cruelty’

Paying Kids Allowance Is ‘Cruelty’

The great allowance debate roars on, and may have moved to a whole new level with a personal-finance scholar’s recent assertion that a “regular, unconditional allowance may be akin to cruelty to children.”

As a teaching tool, allowance isn’t just ineffective — it’s detrimental. So says Lewis Mandell, professor emeritus of finance and managerial economics at SUNY Buffalo.

Mandell is a pioneer in the field of financial education, and for a couple of years he has been questioning the educational benefits of kids receiving a regular allowance...

Arguments in the Home Linked With Babies’ Brain Functioning

Arguments in the Home Linked With Babies’ Brain Functioning

Being exposed to arguments between parents is associated with the way babies’ brains process emotional tone of voice, according to a new study to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The study, conducted by graduate student Alice Graham with her advisors Phil Fisher and Jennifer Pfeifer of the University of Oregon, found that infants respond to angry tone of voice, even when they’re asleep.

Babies’ brains are highly plastic, allowing them to develop in response to the environments and encounters they experience...

T-Cell Therapy Eradicates an Aggressive Leukemia in Two Children

Two children with an aggressive form of childhood leukemia had a complete remission of their disease — showing no evidence of cancer cells in their bodies — after treatment with a novel cell therapy that reprogrammed their immune cells to rapidly multiply and destroy leukemia cells.

A research team from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania published the case report of two pediatric patients Online First today in The New England Journal of Medicine. It will appear in the April 18 print issue.

One of the patients, 7-year-old Emily Whitehead, was featured in...
