Breakfast cereal tied to lower BMI for kids

Breakfast cereal tied to lower BMI for kids

Regularly eating cereal for breakfast is tied to healthy weight for kids, according to a new study that endorses making breakfast cereal accessible to low-income kids to help fight childhood obesity.

One in every four American children lives in a food insecure household where breakfast isn’t a sure thing, lead author Dr. Lana Frantzen told Reuters Health.

«(Cereal) is an excellent breakfast choice, it’s simple, and gets those essential nutrients that children need, especially low income minority children,» who tend to be hit hardest by childhood obesity and related health problems, said F...

Flavoured milk aids nutrition benefits

Flavoured milk aids nutrition benefits

Flavoured milk in a glass or cup is a good way of maximising the nutrition benefits of milk.

An Australian study has found that children who drink flavoured milk are nearly twice as likely to meet their daily calcium targets as exclusively plain milk drinkers, and that children who drink from a cup or a glass consumed twice as much milk as those who only have it with cereal or other foods.

The study, published recently by dietitians in the international peer-reviewed publicationNutrition Research, found that 31% of Australian children do not drink milk and only consume it via other foods, such...

Babies shouldn’t get solid foods until 6 months old

Babies shouldn’t get solid foods until 6 months old

A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found many mothers are feeding babies solid foods earlier than the recommended age of six months, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends solid foods are introduced to infants no earlier than six months of age.

“Solid foods were being started before 4 months in about half of those kids,” said Dr. Deb Lonzer, a pediatrician from the Cleveland Clinic, who did not participate in the study. “And in about 10 percent of them, it was actually being started in the first four weeks of life...

Telling kids about own drug use not wise

Telling kids about own drug use not wise

Parents know that one day they will have to talk to their children about drug use. The hardest part is to decide whether or not talking about one’s own drug use will be useful in communicating an antidrug message.

Recent research, published in the journalHuman Communication Research, found that children whose parents did not disclose drug use, but delivered a strong antidrug message, were more likely to exhibit antidrug attitudes.

How the study was done

Seven tips for helping kids eat healthy

Seven tips for helping kids eat healthy

1. Stop buying junk food.

We generally don’t eat any junk food, so we don’t buy any. This means no cookies, chocolate, crisps or fizzy drinks. Occasionally, we’ll buy arrowroot biscuits. About once every fortnight I’ll bake some cookies, muffins or cakes. This means that when my toddler is hungry between meals, she gets fruit, veggies, nuts, dried fruit, yoghurt, cheese, crackers or a glass of milk.

2. Keep offering healthy food choices.

I have persisted in offering healthy food choices during all meals and snacks. My toddler is now eating food she has disliked or refused in the past...

Snacks for the kids to attack

Snacks for the kids to attack

Be prepared for an attack of the after-school munchies, writes Grant Jones.

It’s  all too easy to depend on a bag of chips, sugary fruit wraps and cheese-and-cracker snack packs as an emergency measure as kids tumble into the kitchen after school and dump their bags on the floor.

While packaged «convenience» foods come in handy, there are far better snack options for growing bodies. When they come in famished, being prepared to feed them fast is the key.

«Arrange a snack-attack shelf in the pantry and fridge from which the children can choose...

Tips for helping kids eat healthy

Tips for helping kids eat healthy

The Health Ministry’s 2006/2007 New Zealand Health Survey found one in 12 children between two and 14 were obese, and one in five children were overweight.

But how do parents get their kids to eat healthy? Is it the parents’ job or is it the responsibility of our society as a whole?

An extract from Dara-Lynn Weiss’s book The Heavy: A Mother’s Battle Against Her Seven-Year-Old Daughter’s Obesity, published on Stuff.co.nz recently caused some serious debate on Weiss’ approach to putting her daughter on a strict Weight Watchers-style diet.

What’s your advice for getting your children to make hea...

Kids and nutrition: A year of living healthfully

Kids and nutrition: A year of living healthfully

I have often wondered how many people make New Year’s resolutions about eating more healthfully. It has to be a huge number, right?

And how many of those people fall short of their ambitious goals? They start off robust, but after a few weeks, life gets in the way, old habits stake their place and the resolution to keep a resolution fades.

We all know that any significant, lasting change takes time. I believe it takes at least a year, if not two, to transform the way a person or a family eats...

Junk food link to kids’ asthma

Junk food link to kids’ asthma

SCOFFING junk food three times a week may lead to asthma and eczema in kids, a study has revealed.

Scientists fear the high saturated fat levels lower children’s immune systems.

A research project involving more than 50 countries found that teenagers who ate food such as burgers three times a week or more were 39 per cent more likely to get severe asthma. Younger kids were 27 per cent more at risk.

Both were also more prone to the eye condition rhinoconjunctivitis. But three weekly portions of fruit and veg cut the risk by 14 per cent in the younger group and 11 per cent among the teens.

Breast milk contains more than 700 bacteria types, study finds

Breast milk contains more than 700 species of bacteria, which is more than previously believed, according to a new study.

Breast milk from overweight mothers or those who put on more weight than recommended during pregnancy, however, had fewer species of bacteria, according to the Spanish researchers.

They also found that mothers who had a planned cesarean-section delivery had fewer species of bacteria in their breast milk than those who had a vaginal birth, while mothers who had an unplanned C-section had about the same number of species of those who had a vaginal birth.

This suggests that a ...
