Should the Beckhams have let their 10-year-old son Romeo model for Burberry?

Should the Beckhams have let their 10-year-old son Romeo model for Burberry?

Jim Shelley is a journalist and a member of Grazia’s fashion jury

Personally, I’m amazed that 10-year-old Romeo Beckham’s appearance in the new Burberry ads has caused so much fuss. What did people think he was going to be? A plumber, perhaps? A dustman? Or, even worse (and even more unlikely, with his parentage), a journalist? No doubt a lot of readers, particularly parents, will criticise the Beckhams for allowing their son to feature in such a high-profile campaign at such a tender age...

Secondhand smoke in pregnancy tied to behavior problems in kids

Secondhand smoke in pregnancy tied to behavior problems in kids

Children whose mothers were exposed to secondhand smoke while they were pregnant may be at greater risk for behavioral problems, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing found that prenatal exposure to secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke, was linked to attention problems and aggression. They added that children exposed to secondhand smoke in the womb also fared worse on language, speech and intelligence tests.
«Such findings could inform public health efforts to reduce public smoking and underscores the need for including [environ...

Born on Christmas Day

Born on Christmas Day

If your due date is December 25th then you might be worrying about having a baby born on one very inconvenient day! Is it really bad news to be born on Christmas day? Are there compensations for a Christmas Day birthday and how hard should you try to hold on until a more acceptable date (if that is at all in your power)?

Most of us are pretty happy to be receiving a baby let alone worrying about the due date but when it comes to Christmas I bet you can name a few people who have a birthday on the 25th of December and if you’ve known them since you were little I bet you’ve always felt a bit sor...

Family Dinners Promote Healthier Eating

Family Dinners Promote Healthier Eating

Having the family sit down together for dinner every night may make children more likely to eat their fruits and vegetables, researchers found.

Schoolchildren whose families ate dinner together every night ate 1.6 more servings of fruits and vegetables each day compared with those whose families never ate together (P<0.001), according to Meaghan Christian, of the University of Leeds School of Food Science and Nutrition in England, and colleagues.

In addition, parents who ate fruits and vegetables every day and who cut them up for their children had kids who ate more of them (P=0...

Mom Keeps Enough Food to Feed Her Family for a Year — Could You?

Mom Keeps Enough Food to Feed Her Family for a Year — Could You?

How long could you live off the food you have in your home? A month? A week? A day? One mom says she could probably go for a whole year without grocery shopping! She keeps a well-stocked pantry, plus a food storage closet in the basement and plenty of frozen meat and vegetables besides. And it’s all just to help feed needy families along with her family.

It’s amazing what some people do with their space and resources! And after a disaster like Hurricane Sandy, I think we all started wondering how self-sufficient we’d be — and for how long — if we were caught in an emergency.

Growing up Morm...

«Sandy Claus» Delivers Toys to Storm-Stricken Kids

«Sandy Claus» Delivers Toys to Storm-Stricken Kids

From his toy-cluttered Brooklyn apartment, the man in the red suit was making his list and checking it twice. But he made no distinction between naughty or nice: Every child on it would receive a gift from this Santa Claus.

For the children whose toys floated away during Superstorm Sandy, Michael Sciaraffo is playing the role of a real-life Saint Nick. Every afternoon and night, he stuffs his red sack to the brim with presents and heads out to storm-ravaged homes, personally delivering new toys to awestruck little kids whose play rooms were destroyed by floodwaters...

Kids and digital media: removing the fears

Kids and digital media: removing the fears

Reports of Adam Lanza’s war-game obsession and the new FTC rules on children’s online privacy help refocus concerns on the effects of digital media on children. But parental anxiety can be channeled toward solutions.

Here is what many parents face this Christmas:

Among 6-to-12-year-olds, the top wish in gifts is a mobile device – either a tablet computer or a smart phone.

And the top two bestselling video games (names withheld on purpose) involve military shooting.

Add these two together and parents may wonder how they can better safeguard their children from the head-spinning advances in di...

Parents ‘need to drink less’ in front of their kids

A study into the impact of parental drinking habits was in the papers today, with the Independent reporting that parents “should drink alcohol less in front of the children” and the Daily Mail claiming that women drinkers “pass on bad habits to their teenage children”.

The study was published by the think-tank Demos. Demos states that its work is driven by “the goal of a society populated by free, capable, secure and powerful citizens”.

The study, entitled ‘Feeling the Effects’, was carried out to assess whether there were alcohol-related harms occurring, to quote the report, ‘beh...

AIHW report: Australia’s oldest new mum gave birth at 60

AIHW report: Australia’s oldest new mum gave birth at 60

THE nation’s oldest new mother gave birth at the age of 60, official records have revealed.
The unidentified woman, who gave birth in 2010, is among dozens of menopausal women who had babies that year, newly released Federal Government data shows.
It is the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’ s most recent survey year.
Institute perinatal statistics director Elizabeth Sullivan yesterday said «fewer than 50» women in their 50s had babies in 2010.
Professor Sullivan would not reveal the precise number, to avoid identifying any of the middle-aged mums, but said most of the births would ha...

Don’t take it personally, grandma: When kids don’t warm up to holiday visitors

Don’t take it personally, grandma: When kids don’t warm up to holiday visitors

Two Christmases ago, Rebekah Crane’s family friend, David, came over with a present for her toddler daughter, Drew. Unfortunately, the little girl, who is now 4, is “cautiously suspicious” of people she doesn’t interact with on a daily basis, Crane said — and for some reason, as a younger child, hated every “strange man” who walked into their house.

“David walked in the front door with a large puzzle of the United States so she could see and learn where all of her family members live — and Drew loves puzzles — it was the perfect gift,” says Crane, author of the young adult novel “P...
