Treating Trauma in Children: No Long-Term Benefit

Treating Trauma in Children: No Long-Term Benefit

Treating children after they’ve been exposed to a traumatic event such as a school shooting or natural disaster is challenging, as many treatments don’t seem effective in the long-term, new research suggests.

A review of 22 studies looking at traumatic stress disorders in children and teens shows that no type of psychological treatment provided significant long-term benefits.

Although some psychological treatments with elements of a type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy did help these patients in the short-term, no drug treatments proved effective.

ADHD often lasts well into adulthood, increases mental illness risk

ADHD often lasts well into adulthood, increases mental illness risk

Sometimes it’s easy for people to simply dismiss attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as just an irritating childhood learning disorder, which eventually disappears when people reach adulthood.

However, ADHD can actually have a more lasting impact than previously thought.  In the first ever population-based to study to follow children with ADHD into adulthood, researchers discovered that nearly a third of children diagnosed with the disorder continued to have ADHD well into their adult years.

Along with this revelatory finding came a whole host of other surprising discoveries reg...

BPA exposure linked to kids’ asthma risk

BPA exposure linked to kids’ asthma risk

Children exposed to the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, may be at an increased risk for asthma, a new study suggests.
During the study, kids who had greater exposure to BPA at ages 3, 5 and 7 were more likely to be diagnosed with asthma before age 12 than children who had less exposure.
BPA is found in some plastics, canned food containers and other food packaging, and most people have detectable levels of the chemical in their urine. Previous studies have linked BPA to a number of health conditions, including childhood obesity and behavior problems.
The new study is the first to report a link b...

Could video games help kids with dyslexia?

Could video games help kids with dyslexia?

Not too many parents would ever encourage their children to spend hours playing video games, but new research suggests some games might actually be beneficial to kids with dyslexia — at least in the short term.

The new study comes from researchers in Italy who found that action video games might make children with dyslexia read better. In fact, they say that 12 hours of video game play did more for the children’s reading skills than what they could be expected from a year of traditional reading treatments or even spontaneous reading.

The researchers believe the reason certain video games mig...

New guidelines for treating ear infections

New guidelines for treating ear infections

New US guidelines now advise against antibiotics for children older than six months.

Ear infections can be a worry for parents. This week the American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) issued new guidelines on treatment.

They advised against antibiotics for children older than six months.

Ear infection symptoms have been a major reason for doctors prescribing antibiotics to children.

The APP stresses that while every parent wants their children to feel better as quickly as possible, antibiotics may not be the answer.

«The goal is to improve the diagnosis and make sure that we preserve the healing po...

Want to Keep Your Kids Fit and Healthy? Just Look at the Clock

Want to Keep Your Kids Fit and Healthy? Just Look at the Clock

Every parent of a school-age kid knows them all too well: the hours between the end of the school day and kids’ bedtime, when parents have to shuttle children to and from activities and sports, put dinner on the table (or otherwise feed kids), ensure homework is done, prepare for the next day, and get everyone to bed at a decent hour. Then get up and do it all again the next day.

Researchers conducting a recent poll looking at why so many American children are overweight or obese call it “crunch time,” the period starting at about 3 p.m. until a child’s bedtime...

Therapy dogs may help autistic kids

Therapy dogs may help autistic kids

For children with autism, trained dogs may offer not only a furry friend, but some therapeutic benefits too, a new research review finds.

There is a «substantial body of evidence» that dogs act as «social catalysts,» even encouraging adults to be a little friendlier to each other, said senior researcher Francesca Cirulli, of the National Institute of Health in Rome, Italy. And the few studies that have focused on kids with autism suggest the same is true for them.

People have long turned to animals as a way to help with health conditions or disabilities — either as part of formal therapy or t...

Experts issue guidelines for gene tests in kids

Experts issue guidelines for gene tests in kids

Groups representing pediatricians and geneticists issued new recommendations on Thursday to provide doctors with guidance about when to test a child’s DNA for genetic conditions.

The recommendations are the first collaboration between the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Neither organization has issued guidelines for genetic testing of kids in over a decade, according to one of the study’s lead authors.

«What we’re trying to show is a unified and consistent message about genetic testing in children,» said Dr...

Kids With Ear Infections May Not Need Antibiotics, New Guidelines Say

Kids With Ear Infections May Not Need Antibiotics, New Guidelines Say

Young children with ear infections don’t necessarily need antibiotic treatment right away. In fact, they may not need the medication at all, according to new guidelines from an influential group of doctors.

Children ages 6 months to 2 years with an infection in one ear who don’t have a high fever, severe pain or other complications can be watched for 48 hours without antibiotic treatment to see if the infection gets worse, the guidelines say. The same watching period applies to older children with amild infection in one or both ears.

The new guidelines, from the American Academy of P...

Fluoride: Necessary or too much of a good thing?

Fluoride: Necessary or too much of a good thing?

Community water fluoridation has been around for more than 65 years, and although proponents cite many benefits, the practice has come under fire recently as critics are questioning the amount our children are consuming – and if it’s even necessary.

Touted as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, community water fluoridation has been shown to significantly decrease tooth decay...
