There are a variety of bath salts available on the market. But customizing your own can be fun, rewarding, and be used as gifts for various occasions. A homemade gift is much more personal and special than a card or an ill-fitting sweater. Below are five bath salt recipes that are easy to make but look like you spent hours working on them.
Ocean Essence Bath Salts

1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda

4-5 drops blue food coloring

4 drops jasmine essential oil

3 drops vanilla extract

Mix Epsom salts and baking soda in a medium bowl using a mixing spoon. Add the food coloring, essential oil and extract, and then quickly stir to avoid clumping. More blue food coloring can be added, depending on how blue you would like your ocean to be. Would be great packaged with seashells or other ocean-themed items.

Holiday Bath Salts

1 cup Epsom salts

1 cup baking soda

4-5 drops red food coloring

4 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix Epsom salts and baking soda in a medium bowl using a mixing spoon. Add the food coloring and oil and mix quickly to avoid clumps. More red can be added until you achieve desired hue. For an added treat, make a separate batch without the food coloring, and layer the white and red salts in a jar for a candy cane affect. Makes the perfect stocking stuffer or homemade gift for the hard-to-shop-for person on your list holiday list. Be sure to tell them that two tablespoons added to bathwater is more than enough to put them in the season’s spirit.

Itch-Be-Gone Bath Salts

1 cup Epsom salts

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup powdered milk

1/2 cup plain instant oatmeal

Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl using a mixing spoon. Add two tablespoons to running bathwater and soak until itchy skin feels relieved. Essential oils or food coloring can be added for appearance or aroma, but when adding to mixture, make sure to mix quickly and well to avoid clumps. Repeat as often as desired. Is great for mosquito or other bug bites, to hydrate dry skin or just to soak in. For a relaxing bath, add 3-4 drops of lavender essential oil to your water.

Energizing Bath Salts

1 cup Epsom salts

1 cup baking soda

3-4 drops eucalyptus essential oil

5-6 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix Epsom salts and baking soda in a bowl. Add essential oil and mix quickly to avoid clumps. Four to five drops of food coloring can be used to add a visual touch, but are not necessary. Any color that makes you feel energized would be perfect. Two tablespoons added to your bath will add pep to the rest of your day.

Fizzy Feelin’ Bath Salts

1 cup Epsom salts

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup citric acid (sour salt)

Mix all three ingredients in a bowl using a mixing spoon. Essential oils or food coloring can be used, as desired. Mix these in quickly to avoid clumping. Add three tablespoons to running bathwater for a fizzy, uplifting experience. Citric acid can be found at most health-food stores or supermarkets and is generally inexpensive.

If you prefer, the Epsom salts in any of these recipes can be replaced with kosher or sea salts in the same quantity. You may want to experiment and see which kind suits your personal preference best. You can also combine all three, just make sure that the mixture does not exceed one cup or you will have to adjust the entire recipe.

To any of the above recipes, you can add 2 tablespoons of glycerin for an extra moisturizing batch of salts. Like citric acid, this can be found at most health food stores. The glycerin also works well if you live in an area that has a generally humid climate, or to try to avoid clumping in the usually-humid confines of a bathroom. Shaking the container you use to store often can also help you avoid this common dilemma. The amount of oils and food colorings are approximate, feel free to experiment according to your own taste.
